The Covering Series explores the intersection of identity and loss via the Jewish mourning ritual known as sitting Shiva. The project was conceived as a way to contend with personal loss by visually addressing the grieving process. The covered forms evoke ancient aspects of the ritual, which include the denial of vision by enrobing one's head. The photographs explore the idea of creating new meaning from old rituals. The goal is to expand on cultural identity and foster the development of new Jewish culture.
A suite of six images from the series is in Harvard’s Fogg Museum collection. Work from this project is included in the book, On Death, a KGP Monolith-Humble Arts Foundation collaboration (2019.) The book is in the collection at The Museum of Modern Art Library.
Images are captured with the landmark Leaf digital camera back. The series includes 24 Vintage Kodak Dye Sublimation Prints, 1993-95, 10”x10”each, Edition of 10 made by the artist.
