Placing Stones visually addresses loss. The project title refers to the Jewish commemoration ritual of leaving a small stone on the grave of a loved one. According to custom, placing a stone serves not only as a physical marker, but also as a mitzvah or good deed by honoring a loved one. In addition, stones are considered well suited to symbolize the permanence of memory. Here, stones are incorporated with old photographs to explore identity, loss and memory both, personal and collective.
